Best Chicago Suburbs For First Time Homebuyers

Chris Grano February 5, 2026

When I work with first-time homebuyers in the Chicago area, one of the biggest questions I hear is, “Where should we actually be looking?” Not just what suburb is popular, but which ones truly make sense for a first purchase. Price matters, but so do taxes, commute, lifestyle, and how easy it will be to sell the home later.

In this video, I ranked what I believe are five of the best suburbs for first-time homebuyers in and around Chicago: Plainfield, Batavia, La Grange Park, Orland Park, and Schaumburg. Each of these suburbs offers something different, and that’s exactly why they’re worth comparing.

Plainfield is a great option for buyers who want newer homes, more space, and strong value for the money. It’s popular with first-time buyers who are okay with a longer commute in exchange for newer construction and family-friendly neighborhoods.

Batavia appeals to buyers who want character, a walkable downtown, and a slightly quieter suburban feel while still having access to Metra and major roadways.

La Grange Park often works well for first-time buyers who want to stay closer to the city of Chicago. It offers solid schools, established neighborhoods, and convenient commuting options without some of the price points found in nearby suburbs.

Orland Park is a strong choice for buyers looking for larger homes, good shopping and dining options, and access to expressways, especially those commuting to different parts of the Chicagoland area.

Schaumburg continues to be one of the most versatile suburbs for first-time homebuyers. With a wide range of housing styles, strong job access, major highways, and amenities, it’s often a great fit for buyers relocating to the Chicago suburbs or moving from the city for the first time.

If you’re a first-time homebuyer in Chicago or planning a move to the Chicago suburbs, the right suburb can make or break your experience. This breakdown is meant to help you narrow your search and choose an area that actually fits your lifestyle, budget, and long-term goals. And if you want help building a plan that’s specific to you, that’s where I come in.
